Reportedly, the Ministry of Defence (India) claimed that by presenting the simplified version of the Akash missile system, the nation had saved almost $5.3 Billion with more orders currently being drafted from the IAF (Indian Air Force) and the Indian Army. India’s defence ministry has given the approval to procure a locally-manufactured short-range surface-to-air missile to guard its airspace throughout the border with Pakistan and China. The ministry stated that it had pull out the international tender to procure a missile system from overseas countries. In parliament, Shripad Naik—India’s Minister of State for Defence—said, “In latest development, short-range surface-to-air missile international case has been halted and also awarded to Akash Prime.”
Akash Prime is a modern version of the domestically made Akash surface-to-air weapon system, proposed and advanced by India’s DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation). A modern version of the regionally produced Akash will have updated “seeker technology, lowered footprint for weapon system constituents, 360° engagement abilities and low temperature/high altitude operation” and a similar system will be positioned in the Himalayan region. Akash is produced by Bharat Dynamics, equipped with a 96% original component, and has a range of 25 Km. The missile utilizes a high explosive and pre-fragmented weapon that can employ several threats simultaneously.
On a related note, recently, India and Japan planned to conduct a fighter jet drill in a proposal to intensify security ties. Both countries planned their first joint fighter aircraft drill in Japan as a part of efforts to advance bilateral security collaboration against regional assertiveness and China’s military buildup. The nations’ defence and foreign ministers also appreciated the noteworthy progress in conciliations for a treaty that will allow the sharing of supplies including ammunition, fuel and defence capabilities. They called for a quick conclusion to the ACSA (acquisition and cross-servicing agreement), as per to a joint statement circulated following the talks in New Delhi.
